Oliver Twist's story is set in London of the early 19th century. The city then was full of poverty and criminality. Only few people of the society were willing to acknowledge this in early Victorian time. Dickens was a social reformer and the book about Oliver drew attention to the dreadful conditions in which so many of London's poor lived.
